The aim of the project is to upgrade the on-board ERTMS system on 50 locomotives SIEMENS Vectron multi-system locomotives owned by ELL GmbH & Co. KG (ELL) from the current ERTMS Baseline 2 to the more advanced ERTMS Baseline 3 system. In the framework of the project, 50 serial international on-boards units will be upgraded.

ELL is one of the leaders on the European railway market in the leasing of locomotives for freight and passenger transport.

The Company’s clients are primarily operators on the most important transportation corridors in the EU. The Company’s locomotives on the TEN-T corridors mainly run and are homologated in countries such as Germany, Austria, Denmark, Poland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway.

The main benefit of the project will be an increased capacity, interoperability and safety of the TEN-T network.

ERTMS Baseline 3 version of the Vectron variants in the ELL’s fleet are already available, but only in small numbers.

Through the implementation of the project and the upgrade to ERTMS Baseline 3 of 50 more locomotives, the Company will significantly increase its competitiveness in the European market and fulfil the provisions of the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/6 of 5 January 2017.

The project contributes to the implementation of the corridor work plans and implementing acts according to Article 47 of the TEN-T Guidelines by implementing the instruction to increase the proportion of rolling stock with the current ERTMS Baseline 3 system running on the different corridors of the TEN-T core and comprehensive network, including those passing through Germany. The project will allow greater interoperability of rolling stock along the trans-European corridors, on which ELL’s locomotives connect Europe.
